Today, we’re kicking off the launch of Search Labs, a new program that allows users to explore early Google experiments. You will receive an email notification when you may begin testing Labs experiments, such as SGE (Search Generative Experience), Code Tips, and Add to Sheets in the United States if you have already signed up for the waitlist at labs.google.com/search. You can sign up for these projects by tapping the Labs button in the most recent Google app (Android and iOS) or on Chrome’s desktop. To view your queue status, go to the Labs website.
Once inside, the new search experience driven by generative AI will assist you in reducing some of the work involved in searching so you can comprehend a topic better.
Here are three ways that new generative AI capabilities can simplify your subsequent search:
- Quickly become knowledgeable on a novel or challenging subject.
You might be beginning to compare learning the ukulele to learning the guitar, for example, before making your final choice. Search will offer an AI-powered snapshot to help you understand the important elements to take into account. Another illustration: If you’re interested in finding out more about starting your own business, try searching for “Benefits of incorporating your business before freelancing.” You can quickly grasp the big picture before using links to articles to delve deeper.
- Discover quick solutions to your particular problems.
There are instances when you have a very specific query in mind and it would be helpful to see a selection of online content. If you discover your favorite vintage sweater hiding in the back of your wardrobe but quickly realize it needs some TLC, look up “How to get an old coffee stain out of a wool sweater?” on the internet. Search for “How can I quickly renew my passport?” if you need to make sure your documents are current yet are getting ready to travel abroad. With the aid of the internet, you may now quickly obtain hints for the important information you need to be aware of or view a variety of possibilities and go to the next phase.
- Get to know a variety of goods and things to think about when purchasing.
Say you want to decorate your apartment using removable wallpaper. Simply perform a search for “Peel and stick wallpaper for kitchen” to learn about crucial details, such as how simple it is to remove, and to find a list of chic options that includes price, user reviews, and links to places where you can make a purchase. Or try searching for “Bluetooth speaker for a pool party” to find a variety of possibilities and key factors to take into account, such as water resistance and battery life.
Additionally, you may “ask a follow-up question” or choose a suggested next step, which will put you in conversational mode, directly beneath the picture if you want to delve deeper.
We’re starting with this experiment to introduce generative AI to Search, and we’ll keep updating and improving it. We’re eager for you to test out these new features and provide feedback as we continue to rethink how we can make it even more natural and easy to locate what you’re looking for.
